It is that time of the year. Christmas music is all you will hear until the clock strikes midnight on 2015 and end-of-the-year list and recaps will flood your feeds. Most are just the opinion of a few, but some are based on data. Spotify has unveiled its end of the year recap, revealed who were the most streamed artists in 2015, though with a month left this seems a bit premature, and unsurprisingly big-name acts like Drake, Ed Sheeran, Major Lazer and Rihanna all top the list.

Drake was the most streamed artists globally, helped along by two mixtape / albums, with 1.8 billion streams this year and 46 million listeners. The most streamed female artist globally is Rihanna, who despite not releasing an album and signing on with TIDAL, still had over 1 billion streams.

The most streamed song of the year was Major Lazer's "Lean On," which also took the crown of the most streamed song ever, which both shows the growth of Spotify and electronic music in pop music. It was streamed a total of 540 million times in 2015.

The top album globally was The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness, beating out Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late, though these flip-flop in the United States. 60 million listeners gave The Weeknd the top spot.

At this point, Ed Sheeran is the most streamed artist of all time.

Some deeper sounds are getting love too as Kygo was named the breakout artist of 2015 and Robin Schulz's "Sugar" was the most Viral Track of 2015, appearing on the Global Viral 50 Chart 55 times in 2015. "Hotline Bling" was not far behind at number 2.

The difference between the global artists and U.S. market is small. The global market has a sprinkling of more electronic music in top tracks and viral tracks, compared to the U.S. market, which is more hip-hop based.
