As the year wraps up, it is always interesting to look back at the numbers to see which artists made an impact in their respective field. Beatport has unveiled its list of the top selling and most streamed songs for 2015 on its portal. Some of the names that top the list are expected including Tiësto, but there is a clear trend away from big, thundering EDM tracks and more club-ready or crossover tracks that help bridge that divide, like those from Martin Solveig.
The top selling track was the funky and catchy single "Intoxicated" from Martin Solveig and GTA, which saw mainstream appeal on radio and festival crowds. Solveig took the number 5 selling song "+1" as well, but one has to dig all the way to number 11 to find a mainstage track - "Secrets" from Tiësto and KSHMR. Beyond "Secrets," the top-selling track were all house, techno and indie-dance records, which would indicate that EDM's grip on the genre is loosening, at least among those who still buy music and on Beatport.
Streaming tells a slightly different story. There is a stronger contingent of EDM acts with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike & Ummet Ozcan's "The Hum" leading the list, while names like Tiësto, Martin Garrix and MOTi are scattered across the top 20. Here there is a strong resurgence of "future house" leaders Oliver Heldens and Tchami, who have continued to make a big impact in 2015.
Some of this is subjective because tracks that were released earlier in the year have a better chance to sell, especially in the dance world where they are constants in DJ sets and can reemerge several months later, but as Adele showed late year releases can net big sales.
