Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes, has surprise-released a new song, "Fifteen Minutes To." As Pitchfork reports, the singer-songwriter shared the previously unreleased track via her Tumblr account, stating that it "probably" pre-dates one of her full-length albums from 2010, Halafaxa.

While it's certainly the season for countless artists to give the gift of new holiday-inspired music away for free, "Fifteen Minutes To" isn't exactly new nor is it Christmas-themed. However, the bells give the track a wintry vibe so it fits right in anyway. Give it a listen via Grimes' YouTube, below.

Clocking in just under two minutes, "Fifteen Minutes To" is a wonderful reminder of the ways in which Art Angels is a departure from much of Boucher's earlier, far less pop-influenced sound. For fans who may have only just gotten to know Grimes, the gloomy track is just the thing to demonstrate the singer's full range within the more experimental realms of synthy dream pop.

As Stereogum points out, the track was apparently re-discovered by some fans nestled in an old episode of the now-defunct Canadian Midnight Poutine Podcast. The episode originally aired in March of 2010.

The clip was actually posted by fans on Tumblr before Boucher officially shared it. In the fans' copy of the clip, which was ripped from the aforementioned podcast, the show hosts explain that "Fifteen Minutes To" was one of four songs the singer had shared with Midnight Poutine back in 2010. After playing the track, the hosts state it is from "a new album which is not even finished yet" and that the track itself is "either unmastered or about to be mastered."

At the end of the podcast clip, the hosts also ramble a bit about a free Grimes show happening that evening at McGill University. So with the gift of a new track also comes a slight twinge of jealousy because while she is currently in the midst of an extensive tour, the days of being able to walk into a tiny college campus venue without a ticket in hand or a cover at the door to see her perform are long gone.
