Apple has been one of the biggest players in the music industry since it launched iTunes in 2003. It has developed music production software with Logic and Garageband and streaming with Apple Music. Now it is expanding on it mobile capabilities with a new app named Music Memos.

Users who have the recording application Memos will be familiar with Music Memos, but there are some additional features to increase functionality. Music Memos records high-quality uncompressed audio through the built-in mic in your iPhone, or you can connect an external microphone.

The announcement admits that the program is optimized for acoustic guitar and piano, but works with other instruments as well.

It has interesting features that can be useful for solo artists or those just getting started on an idea. It analyzes your basic arrangement and suggests chords to layer and provides a backing band with a virtual drummer and bass player to go along with your recording.

You can save your recordings and sort through them by naming them or giving them star ratings.

Once you have saved your audio file, you can then import them into Garageband or Logic and use them or tinker with them. They can also be uploaded directly to SoundCloud, YouTube or Apple Music if you feel that confident in what was just created.

The app is not designed to help record a song from start to finish that can be then played on a radio - it realizes that. It is there to record ideas on the fly because sometimes inspiration happens away from your equipment, in an elevator, on a bus or somewhere else and your iPhone is the only thing that can record.
