Today is a good day for albums. There have been plenty of them and Los Angeles native DJ and producer Tokimonsta, born Jennifer Lee, has added her own 7-track LP to the mix. Titled Foreve (no that is not a misprint), she works with a variety of different artists on this project like the seemingly unstoppable Anderson .Paak, KRNE and Gavin Turek.
Entirely a vocal album, the 23-minute project calls upon some familiar friends for Toki. Though the world is just now waking up to the talents of .Paak, especially after he was signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment.
The most upbeat track on the LP was "Put It Down" with Anderson .Paak and KRNE. Unsurprisingly the lead single, "Put It Down" features booming horns and pitched synth keys in the drop in between some softer breaks with guitar plucks and hip-hop influenced drums. .Paak flips back and forth between rapping and singing over the beat.
The LP ends on a softer and more soothing note with the downtempo r&b jam "Would Up" featuring a l l I e.
This album has some continuity, but with just 7 tracks and her diverse production talents, it makes sense to have a scattered, compilation feel to the record. Her production varies from upbeat, club bangers to downtempo r&b jams, future bass-influenced tracks and everywhere in between.
This is Tokimonsta's fourth album in total and first since her 2014 LP Desiderium. She has also worked on other productions, including Gavin Turek's You're Invited album last year and a whole slew of remixes over the past five years.
