Spotify has led the way in curation and playlist creation, but seeing the competitive market, also started to create some original content. It has announced a new program titled Singles, that partner with various artists to perform an original song of theirs and then covers of a popular song, past or present. They can be acoustic covers or just live renditions of the songs. Unveiled today, The first batch of 42 songs include tracks from John Legend, Tove Lo, GRiZ, Juanes, Grouplove, The Naked & Famous and more.

John Legend starts the playlist with his own "Love Me Now" and then dives into Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On."

The covers are recorded at the Spotify New York office in their studio. Each Wednesday, Spotify will update the playlist with new songs. It plans on adding over 100 songs to the playlist in the next year.

In addition to the new Singles program, special "superfans," people identified based on their listening patterns, will be invited to attend these performances in the future.
