It all started when he spoke to 101.1 WJRR, saying their next project might be their last record. saying it's going to be "the last run around the mill" for them because they exerted all of their efforts, energy, and emotion into the album.

When he was writing the songs, he was inspired by the things he went through in life and it's going to be apparent in the record's sequence.

He clarified that it was not planned that way, but he felt a "mystical thing," making him believe that the "universe" wrote the album.

Sully Erna Defends His Initial Comments About Making Their 'Final Album'

In the most recent interview, Erna clarified his initial comments, saying he didn't suggest that the band will break up, but rather their upcoming album might be the "last body of work" fans could get from them musically.

The reason why they won't be releasing any more songs in the future because of their personal lives, saying they've accomplished a lot over the past three decades.

"We could literally do back-to-back nights in an arena and play 15 songs a night and never play the same single twice, let alone the 'B' cuts," he said, saying he didn't want to sound "egotistical." (via Banana 101.5)

In addition, Erna noted that he and his band mates started questioning themselves, asking why are they still "grinding all the time" and making new music.

Godsmack wanted to spent more time with their family and enjoy their lives because they've already earned a lot over the years they sacrificed.

Speaking about their future plans, Erna said they're still uncertain of the future after they released a new album, but he knows that making music doesn't make sense anymore.

"It really feels complete in a good way, in a positive way. We feel like we've honored our career, our relationships with our fans, and we're always gonna be there for them," he added.
