Mariah Carey opened up about her dysfunctional childhood and how the bright side of the traumatic experience made her fall in love with the Christmas season.

A few days before fans flip their calendars to welcome the month of December, Carey has been making noises again with her hit Christmas songs. In an interview with W Magazine for its Volume 6 The Holiday Issue ahead of Christmastime, Carey talked about her childhood experience in which her love for the season was rooted.

The 53-year-old "All I Want For Christmas Is You" hitmaker said that she started feeling joy when she witnessed a transformation in her life. Despite having a dysfunctional past, she made it to where she is now.

"When you grow up with a messed-up life and then you're able to have this transformation where you can make your life what you want it to be? That is joy for me. That's why I want my kids to have everything they can have. I want them to be able to understand that they can be anything they want to be," Carey said, as quoted by PEOPLE.

She also talked about her famous prima donna persona and its origin story, admitting that part of that attitude is actually real.

The Grammy-winning crooner explained that people always see her "dive" thing first. Carey, on the other hand, said she plays into it because it is real.

Why Mariah Carey Loves Christmas Season

The Christmas season indeed made the singer more famous because of her season-themed songs.

Aside from the recent interview, her memoir "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" provided more details about her traumatic childhood she talked about.

Among those events included the fights between her father, Alfred Roy, and brother Morgan. She said her family constantly ruined the holiday season with their fighting.

According to Carey, the heated arguments that turned into verbal abuse made her wish she could be somewhere safe and merry so she could feel Christmas for real. Fortunately, she thought about it for the first time when she spent the holidays with her gay uncles, Burt and Myron.

She recalled that her experience at her uncles' home gave her the true meaning of Christmas she always wanted to know.

As she grows older in the music industry, Carey continues to give and share the joy with fans through her Christmas-themed music. Among her hit songs are "All I Want For Christmas Is You," "Oh Santa!" "Charlie Brown Christmas," "When Christmas Comes," "Joy To The World," and "O Holy Night," to name a few.
