Born on January 16, 1980, in New York City, the musician is celebrating his 43rd birthday today! His parents are Luz Towns-Miranda, a clinical psychologist, and Luis Miranda Jr, a political consultant.

At a young age, Miranda had been fascinated with musicals as he starred in a school play at Hunter College High School directed by journalist Chris Hayes who happens to be his classmate at the time.

While pursuing his early education, he wrote the earliest draft of the musical "In The Heights" which later became a Broadway hit. The show first premiered in 1999 when he attended Wesleyan University as it was accepted by the school's theater company, Second Stage.
