According to Page Six, the 30-year-old singer and Gigi Hadid's ex "had a thing" before to this week's dinner rendezvous in New York.
"They had a thing years ago when Taylor and Harry were dating," one insider told the site.
"It comes as no surprise to me that they might be together [today]."
Selena and Zayn's affair began in 2012, while Taylor Swift, one of Selena's closest friends, was dating One Direction's Harry Styles.
Taylor and Harry were initially seen together in December 2012, before splitting up a month later.
According to Us Weekly, Zayn is "definitely into" Selena, but the couple has yet to take their relationship to a "super serious" or exclusive level. According to an unidentified insider, the singer has always liked her and regards her as a wonderful person.
One insider said that Selena Gomez and Zayn Malik were photographed together this week in New York, looking extremely at ease with each other as they shared a dinner date.
Despite the fact that the former Disney child star is free to see other people, the "Icarus Falls" singer wants to keep their relationship going and see where it goes.

It all started when a TikTok user shared a video in which she revealed that one of her friends worked as a waitress at the restaurant where Zayn and Selena were dining.
The user provided images of chats from her buddy in which she alleged that she observed them kissing during their dinner to back up her allegation.
Another source has confirmed the two's love relationship, alleging that they were seen entering a restaurant arm-in-arm and embracing each other.
The source remarked on how at ease they seemed in each other's company.
According to a source who talked with Entertainment Tonight, Selena and Zayn had a romantic evening out in New York City's SoHo area Friday night.
They were seen approaching the location hand in hand and sharing love kisses about 10:30 p.m.
Despite the presence of other diners, the couple appeared to be at comfortable.
