The fate of "The Idol" Season 2 hangs in the balance despite the show's controversial reviews throughout the week.

The show received the lowest debut viewership compared to "The White Lotus" and "Euphoria," former top billers of HBO.

The Idol Season 2 Canceled?

According to a Page Six source, "The Idol" Season 2 won't be getting a second season after all, as showrunner The Weeknd says.

"This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always ... a limited series," a source close to the production said. Meanwhile, another source from HBO said that there had been no definite answer yet.

"The door is definitely still open - it's definitely not a decision [yet]. At this point, this is normal in our process ... we're only two episodes in," they said,

People were shocked to see the very explicit and "comically bad" scenes in the show despite having a star-studded lineup of stars in the mix.

Meanwhile, the public relations team of HBO responded to the ongoing rumor on social media about the show.

"It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night,." a tweet from the team said.

The Idol Season 2 Reviews

So far, since Episode 2 came out, "The Idol" has received a scathing review from GQ Magazine.

"It's hard to imagine anything as unsexy as what we're told to believe is the most radical, boundary-pushing TV sex ever," the review reads. It gives us no real explanation for why Jocelyn would want to go near Tedros, let alone be the personal ragdoll for his horndog monologues. It's male fantasy in its purest form, made by men who think they know how to tell complex stories because they can light a nipple artfully."

According to Forbes, "The Idol" only raked in 913,000 viewers on its premiere episode, which was a 17% decline from when "Euphoria," another Sam Levinson series, launched back then.

Working conditions on the set have also been conflicting, with some sources saying that working the "egomaniacal" like The Weeknd was not the most ideal one, while another say that he is the best.
