Freddie Mercury still had his loved ones, partner, and friends at the time of his death, but he chose to leave everything he had to the "love of my life," Mary Austin.

Over three decades after Mercury died in 1991, his personal belongings - which he had left to his close confidante, Austin - are now up for auction. More than 1,400 personal items entered the free exhibition at Sotheby's London on Aug. 4, and the event would run until September, Associated Press reported.

But after the "Bohemian Rhapsody" hitmaker's belongings entered the spotlight, questions like why he chose to leave his possessions to the woman he broke up years before his death emerged.

Why Did Freddie Mercury Name Mary Austin in His Will?

Prior to his death, Mercury finalized his will and divided his net worth among his loved ones: his parents, his sister Kashimira Bulsara, and Austin.

The "Radio Gaga" hitmaker once appeared in an interview that he considered Austin the love of his life, although they broke up and he spent his last years with Jim Hutton.

In fact, she is also the only person where Mercury's ashes are, making it more obvious why Mercury left everything he had to her.

"I can only name one dear person who I can actually open up to and feel really happy with," he said, per Express UK. "I might have all the problems in the world, but I have Mary and that gets me through."

Mercury also revealed that the two individuals who gave him back as much love as he gave to them were Austin and their cat, Jerry.

Mary Austin Received 75 Percent of Freddie Mercury's Total Net Worth

As of 2023, Austin has three-fourths of Mercury's net worth, while the remaining 25 percent belongs to the singer's sister.

She also gets royalties from Mercury's music and projects related to him, including the hit biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody," which gave her $75 million in 2018. She also owns the "Love of My Life" singer's $33 million London home.

Before the Queen singer's death, he spoke about his love for Austin and how his lovers always asked him why they could never replace her in his heart. For Mercury, even when they broke up, Austin was his common-law wife.
