Chris Brown is owning up to his actions. Today (Sept. 2), the "New Flame" singer pleaded guilty in connection to an assault case in Washington, D.C.

According to CBS News, Brown pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge after punching a fan outside of a club in October.

The D.C. assault case carried a heavy weight and potential punishment for Brown. He was still under probation for his 2011 assault on Rihanna at the time of the altercation and violated the rules of his probation by hitting the man, who tried to get into a photo Brown was taking with two female fans.

Despite the seriousness of his actions and the guilty plea, Brown will not be returning to jail. He was sentenced to time served. This year, Brown spent 131 days in jail after getting kicked out of a rehabilitation center as he dealt with anger issues.

Brown's attorney, Danny Onorato, cited that the singer had been punished enough, delaying his carrer (and new album X) for a year after the assault.

"To say that he's been punished severely in this matter is an understatement," he said.

Brown was quiet both in the courtroom and outside, stating simply: "I would like to say to the court that I'm sorry."

Brown then left without interacting with the media or fans outside the courthouse.

His on again/off again girlfriend Karrueche Tran was there for moral support.

Brown's new album X will be released on Sept. 26.
