When Jo Koy said "It's about to go down," he really went down with his most recent hosting gig at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The collective groan and disdain from the audience during his now infamous opening monologue echoed the sentiments of everyone on the internet - his downfall is bigger than Oppenheimer's bomb.

Aside from the misogynistic and tasteless jokes that he blamed on his own writers, Jo Koy made his biggest mistake of the night when he used Taylor Swift to elicit laughs from an already annoyed audience.

Now, the comic is explaining his joke.

Jo Koy Had Taylor Swift Gulping His Drink After NFL Joke

After bombing his opening monologue, Jo Koy did even worse when he delivered his Taylor Swift joke. While it is unavoidable to joke about the most important person in the room, Jo Koy's joke about Taylor Swift fell flat.

"As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader," Jo Koy quipped. "The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear."

Then, the camera panned to an unamused Taylor Swift looking at the host, sipping her Chardonnay quietly.

Swift's reaction perfectly described the mood of pretty much every other artist at The Beverly Hilton last night. Jo Koy also joked about the highest-grossing film of 2023, "Barbie," reducing it to be a movie about a "plastic doll with big boobies." As expected, director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie gave a faint grin following the joke. Ryan Gosling, who practically laughs about everything, was also unamused with the "Barbie" joke.

Jo Koy Explains Taylor Swift Joke

Speaking to "GMA3: What You Need to Know," Jo Koy attempted to explain his joke about Taylor Swift.

"I think it was when the Taylor [Swift] one was just a little flat...It was a weird joke, I guess. But it was more on the NFL...I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn't have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn't come out that way," he confessed.

Talking about the experience, Jo Koy had this to say:

"I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I'll always remember," Koy revealed. "It's a tough room. It was a hard job, I'm not going to lie...I'd be lying if [I said] it doesn't hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, 'Ah.' Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I'm a stand-up comic but that hosting position it's a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer's thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did."

Variety had described Jo Koy to be "woefully unqualified" as a host at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.
