Last month, Green Day released a new song titled "Dilemma" and to some people, the lyrics were too direct, but frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shared an explanation, saying it was his real intention, to show what really happens to those who are going through a hard time in life.

According to Billboard, the latest single revolves around the true story of the musician's alcohol addiction as well as his time in a rehabilitation center.

In the lyrics, he sang: "I was sober, now I'm drunk again/ I'm in trouble and in love again/ I don't want to be a dead man walking... Welcome to my nightmare/ Where dreams go to disappear/ Sit around in rehab/ Feeling like a lab rat."

Armstrong recently spoke with People Magazine for an interview where he detailed that the song indeed talks about his problems.

Green Day 'Dilemma' Lyrics Meaning

Later in the interview, the singer/songwriter further explained "When I say, 'I was sober, now I'm drunk again,' that could be looked at two different ways. It could be someone going, 'F-k, yeah. I was sober, now I'm drunk again,' at a party, or it could be someone that's fallen. That's what it means to me, anyway."

He also dropped by Howard Stern's radio show earlier this week where he noted that he would be sober for half a decade and thought that he could go back to be "like a normal drinker."

Unfortunately, being a "normal drinker" didn't last as he recalled that it escalated.

Armstrong got to a point in life where he was drained mentally and physically and he felt terrible about it.

Billie Joe Armstrong Says 'Dilemma' is One of His Most Honest Songs

The frontman later admitted that he wrote "Dilemma" when he was drinking and for him, it was one of the most honest songs that he ever written.

Regarding its lyrics, Armstrong said: "There's like no metaphor or anything like that," as it was very direct to the point.

Fortunately, the musician found his way back to a normal life and revealed that he doesn't drink alcohol anymore. He also noted that he didn't enter any program to deal with his issues.

"I ended up being around a bunch of really good friends that don't drink... There's a lot more sober people - I've noticed that, and maybe because I was the only one that was hammered before, that now I notice that people are more sober now," he added.
