  • Alt-J Samples Miley Cyrus On New Single 'Hunger of the Pine' [LISTEN]

    As previously reported, Alt-J is set to release its follow-up to 2012's excellent debut An Awesome Wave, on September 22 via Warner Music. Now the U.K. trio has revealed the first of 13 tracks, "Hunger of the Pine," featuring Miley Cyrus.

    It has been almost two years since Alt-J released the excellent Mercury Prize-winning An Awesome Wave, and now the UK band has announced its follow-up. Titled This Is All Yours, the 13-track album is due out September 22 via Warner Music.

    Last week a Buzzfeed map caused mass-music confusion for readers who failed to understand what it was showing them. Many assumed they were seeing a chart revealing every state's favorite band, when in fact the map was showing them what performer was listened to in larger amounts in that state versus in other states. The difference between the two options is important. A new map has now emerged that actually reveals every state's "favorite" performer based on the listening habits of 250,000 individuals (which admittedly is not a very large sample).
  • Alt-J announces departure of founding bassist Gwil Sainsbury on Twitter

    UK electro rockers Alt-J have announced the departure of founding bassist Gwil Sainsbury. In a Twitter post yesterday (January 11), the band wrote that he was leaving Alt-J effective immediately. The departure appears to be amicable with the band saying the removal was "purely a personal decision" and "as our best friend, we support him completely."

    Alt-J (∆) stopped by Late Show with David Letterman last night in support of last year's debut album, An Awesome Wave. They performed a shaky, unenthusiastic version of "Fitzpleasure," but even when they aren't at their highest intensity, they can still make an intricate song like "Fitzpleasure" work live. According the band's Facebook page, it was the "final song we'll ever play in 2013."

  • Local Natives, Kendrick Lamar and Alt-J top 'hardest working bands' list

    For the third year in a row, music site Songkick has compiled a list of the "19 hardest working bands" in show business. The list takes two factors into consideration: the performers' total number of shows played, combined with the total distance travelled to play those shows. This year's winner was Local Natives: The rock band played a total of 188 shows (more than any other act on the list), while traveling around 192,486 km.

    Tonight, two radio stations are hosting star-studded concerts to celebrate the holidays. San Francisco Bay Area alt-rock station Live 105 returns for night two of its Not So Silent Night gala and Los Angeles' KROQ launches night one of its Almost Acoustic Christmas.

    Last night's concert at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park had all the elements to be a great show. The weather was near perfect. The outdoor venue, surrounded by trees, had a whimsical ambiance. No matter where you stood in the intimate confines, you weren't too far from the stage. And, oh yeah, Alt-J (∆) would be playing.
