• Brian Wilson, Kacey Musgraves, Conor Oberst Headline Northside Festival 2016 Lineup

    SXSW is the standard when it comes to music, tech and film festivals, but Brooklyn (of course) is trying to build one of its own with Northside Festival. The festival has only just begun to unveil its more than 400 musical acts, but the main headliners were announced today and the top acts are Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds as he will at various other festival across the United States to celebrate the Beach Boys album's 50th year anniversary, Kacey Musgraves, Conor Oberst and Wolf Parade.

    Last night a special hip-hop moment happened. One of the very best to ever pick up a mic, Nas appeared on stage with Run The Jewels -- one of the hottest up-and-coming duos in hip-hop right now. Run The Jewels were scheduled to perform as the headliner at 50 Kent, the main outdoor venue at the Northside Festival in Brooklyn, and they had a very special trick up their sleeves. The Illmatic rapper showed up as a surprise guest to perform his 'God's Son' track "Made You Look" at the end of RTJ's set and your author was on hand to capture the action on video.

    Most music fans are familiar with the major music festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza that showcase the biggest bands in the world. However, there are plenty of smaller local festival that showcase mid-level, up-and-coming and local acts that will be the next wave of headliners at those major, big-ticket festivals. New York City has countless music events happening every weekend, notably during the summer, and in three weeks, Northside Festival will be taking over Brooklyn with a combination of speakers, films and music. The festival just announced the majority of the artists who will be performing this year including Best Coast, Run The Jewels, Zola Jesus and Vince Staples.
