The Latin Recording Academy is heeding recommendations and acting on complaints after being widely scrutinized in 2023 for its lack of representation in Mexican music.

Now, the Grammys have introduced more categories for the Latin Grammy Awards.

Latin Grammy Awards New Categories

The Latin Recording Academy added two new categories to the Latin Grammy Awards.

Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album and Best Latin Electronic Music Performance were added to the current Latin Grammy Awards categories roster.

Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album

According to the official Grammy website, the category is for vocal or instrumental albums of Contemporary Regional Mexican Music. The material should contain at least 51 percent of the time recorded with new material and maintain at least 60 percent of the essence of the genres of Regional Mexican Music.

The said award is presented to solo artists, duos, groups, producers, recording engineers, and mixing engineers who are 51 percent or more present on the total playing time of the album.

Best Latin Electronic Music Performance

The Recording Academy also introduced the Best Latin Electronic Music Performance category to embrace the evolving landscape of electronic music in South America.

Both singles and tracks, whether vocal or instrumental, are eligible for the category. The recordings must have 51 percent playing time of Latin Electronic music genres and emerging genres or Latin elements that accurately reflect the ever-growing trends in Latin electronic music.

Meanwhile, interpolations and samplings are eligible as long as they do not constitute more than 25 percent of the recording's lyrics or music. Remixes are also eligible and presented to solo artists, duos, or groups.

Latin Recording Academy Faces Scrutiny Over Mexican Representation

Despite being one of the biggest artists of 2023, Peso Pluma's "Genesis" was seemingly snubbed in the race for Album of the Year in 2023. However, it could be because of eligibility issues with deadlines.

However, some critically acclaimed albums, like Eslabon Armado's Desvelado and Carin Leon's Colmillo de Leche, which were submitted within the deadline, were snubbed in the top prize race.
