MEXICO CITY - What was supposed to be a night of celebration for Mexican fans of Christina Aguilera ended up turning into a storm of criticism, memes and complaints to the Federal Consumer Protection Agency.

The singer performed this week at the Sports Palace in Mexico City, in a concert highly anticipated by her fans, but the conversation afterwards did not revolve around her voice or her classics, but rather the short duration of the show, the cut-down repertoire, and a mistake that was very poorly received by part of the audience: thanking "New Mexico" instead of Mexico.

According to various reports, the show started late and ended after only about 55 to 60 minutes of actual performance time. The concert, scheduled for 8:00 PM, began an hour late and concluded at 10:00 PM, leaving approximately one hour of actual performance. The sentiment of many attendees can be summed up by a phrase that was repeated on social media: some people took longer to get to the venue than the show lasted.

The frustration grew because the duration contradicted the information circulating on the event's public page. On an online events calendar, the presentation was listed with the description "Approximate duration: 120 minutes." Based on this information, several fans began to argue that the advertised product did not match what they ultimately received.

Collective complaints have been seen on social media connecting with Profeco, the government consumer protection agency, although so far neither the agency nor Ticketmaster had issued a specific public statement on this case.

That point is key, because the anger hasn't been limited to the length of the show. Many attendees also criticized the fact that several songs were performed in abbreviated versions and that the setlist was too similar to the one Aguilera had presented in Mexico in 2016. The concert included 17 songs, several of them shortened, and comments circulated on social media about a production considered by some to be too basic for the ticket price.

But if the duration was the fuel, the "New Mexico" comment was the viral spark. During one of the most emotional moments of the concert, Aguilera confused Mexico City with the U.S. state of New Mexico, and the slip-up immediately spread through videos, screenshots, and reactions on social media.

For many, it was a simple stage mishap. For others, it was the perfect example of a disconnect with the local audience on a night that was already stumbling. That moment sealed the collective bad mood.

The tone of the reactions has been especially harsh because it was an important comeback.

The visit marked Christina Aguilera's return to a solo concert in the Mexican capital after a decade, and expectations were high among her fans. Therefore, the contrast between the emotional promise of a great night and the final feeling of a rushed show has been the focus of conversation.

On social media, some fans complained about partial refunds, others about misleading advertising, and still others simply about disappointment. All of this has put pressure on promoters and ticket sellers, although for now the complaints are mainly circulating on social media and in the public sphere.

The story took another turn on March 18, when the artist visited Frida Kahlo's Blue House in Coyoacán. The cultural stop, which in another context might have been seen as an elegant nod to Mexico, came at the worst possible time. The museum itself shared the message Aguilera left in the guestbook: "Such a beautiful and inspiring space, woman, and life. Viva la vida! Thank you for the special tour. Always, Christina."

However, on social media the image was interpreted ironically by some users, who commented that her time at the Blue House almost "lasted longer than the concert".

For now, the controversy surrounding Christina Aguilera in Mexico sums up an old truth of show business: a great voice is not always enough to save a bad night, and you have to know where you are singing and give your best, not an old and limited production.
