Have you noticed that Richard Simmons seems to have dropped off the radar? Think about it: The fitness guru usually turns up in support of some charity event in his tank top and short-shorts and we are all momentarily amused. Then there are the multitude of people whom he has helped with weight problems and self-acceptance, usually a new video or workout is available to keep them plugging along.

Unfortunately, Simmons has been MIA for the majority of 2014, and it took until now for it to really click.

TMZ is reporting that Simmons is suffering from a knee injury that will ultimately require him to have his left knee replaced. A source close to Simmons claims he is terrified of the surgery, but without it doctors have told him he will never exercise again. The fitness expert has apparently let the fear overwhelm him to the point of inactivity. Rather than take the necessary steps to heal his body, he has stayed hidden, growing more depressed as time goes on.

Simmons owns a popular studio in Beverly Hills, but has not been on site in months, and friends claim he is not returning their phone calls or accepting any visitors. The last time Simmons was actually seen out in public was in early January for a charity event. He supposedly has tried alternative treatments, such as blood platelet therapy, but they have apparently failed. At this point, some of Simmons's business associates think the bum knee is an excuse he is hiding behind while more serious issues are really what has made him a shut-in.

Readers: Do you think Simmons's debilitating fear is really connected to needing knee surgery, or is his depression about his aging and possibly failing health in general? Simmons has often exhibited bizarre behavior, according to The Huffington Post, so could this just be more of the same? Have you ever been helped or inspired by Simmons?
