We've seen just about everything on the vinyl front during 2014: We were stoked for the 30th anniversary version of Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" theme that glowed in the dark (a Record Store Day release), Jack White cracked recent sales records for the format with various copies of Lazaretto that did a number of tricks, and Perfect Pussy blended vocalist Meredith Graves' blood into a limited number of otherwise clear pressings. What could possibly come next? How about scratch 'n' sniff vinyl

That's the idea of Welsh indie pop figure Marina and The Diamonds (actually a solo performer, despite the title) for her forthcoming album Froot. Rather than launch the album as a typical one-or-two 12-inch set, Marina will be releasing the new record as a series of six 7-inch discs, similar to how AFI packaged its December Underground circa 2006. Each disc, as you may have guessed, will come in a different color representing a different variety of "froot," with a scent to match.

Alas, unfortunately, the pressings themselves will not have an odor. Each of the discs-yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue and green-comes in a matching sleeve that serves as the scratch 'n' sniff element. This is somewhat disappointing...it seems as if the circular labels at the center of a record would serve well for such a purpose. Making the vinyl itself scented is out of the question of course...no one likes scratched vinyl.

Froot will be out on April 6. There's no word yet on whether the scratch 'n' sniff version of the album will be a limited release.
