Brooklyn-based artist Dave Doobinin will release his new album The Left Side Jan. 13, 2015. The effort explores the notion of "home" and was inspired by immense loss. Writing the album helped him deal with the death of his father, which occurred years ago, and was also informed by his mother becoming gravely ill.
"After my dad died, I didn't have a home, I had nowhere to go. I was rudderless out there," Doobinin said in a statement. "My relationship with him was based, in a way, around sports. That's how we connected, and it was hard when I felt I was lacking something in that department-like maybe I didn't have it on the left side."
The "left side" is a phrase his father used to test his son's strength.
"That was something he always said, it was like 'Are you tough? Do you have it on the left side?' It was a poignant line for me as a kid," Doobinin revealed. "This record is about breaking through that self-questioning through, first, acknowledgement, and then standing up to it. ...It's also about my friends that aren't here anymore, it represents fear, that fear after loss."
The record was produced by Jeff Lipstein, who besides being a producer was formerly the drummer in one of Doobinin's very first bands.
The Left Side will be streaming in full on Music Times beginning on Jan. 5. In celebration of the upcoming release, Doobinin and Music Times are giving away five free T-shirts (see above) from Feather Weight Clothing Company, designed by Krissy Teegerstrom, who also designed the album cover.
