Uptown Special will be Ronson's fourth studio album overall, his first since 2010's Record Collection. Between these two records, Ronson has spent his time producing albums for other artists, including Lil Wayne, Duran Duran, and Bruno Mars, with his most recent credit being Paul McCartney's 2013 album New.

"Production-wise, this is the most progressive record I've ever done," Ronson told Billboard about Uptown Special. "When I play my last album next to something contemporary, it's obvious we just recorded all of our drums with one mic. This time around, I wanted that s**t to sound tough, crisp — and f***ing massive."
