It's gearing up to be a major February for John Legend. The "All of Me" singer is nominated at the Grammys and the Oscars, but those are only small fry compared to the audience Legend had to take on tonight: tens of millions of fans at Super Bowl XLIX. Ahead of performances from Idina Menzel and Katy Perry, Legend kicked off the music at the Seattle Seahawks-New England Patriots game by performing "America the Beautiful."

Legend wore a simple black T-shirt and black leather jacket, performing atop a platform with his own grand piano.

Legend went for a straightforward approach on "America The Beautiful," letting his own pure voice and piano carry the song along instead of going for too much flare. It was a short, simple performance, with Legend allowing the emotion of the patriotic song to bring him into the moment.

And he pulled it off like the cool cat he is, of course.

While Legend performed, images of major cities from across the United States flashed across the screen, with some extra emphasis on Seattle and Boston, of course.

Watch John Legend perform at Super Bowl XLIX below:

Legend wasn't the only performer on hand to bring some music to the Super Bowl. Idina Menzel immediately followed Legend, performing the National Anthem. And come halftime, the show will be all Katy Perry's, with some help from Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, of course.
