"Honestly, I sit down with my guitar, sing what comes to mind until something makes sense and I just hope I remember it," Americana singer-songwriter and newcomer Caroline Spence said about her new album Somehow, out March 3. Although the process may seem simple for the 2013 American Songwriter Lyric Grand Prize contest winner, Spence's music is anything but basic.

Somehow, Spence's debut album, is an Americana gem in the rough. From the light and touching "One Man" to steady, driving and biting songs like "Kissing Ain't The Same as Talking," Spence is a thoughtful and careful songwriter. Although the majority of Somehow follows the pattern of her soft and whispered voice, the album is as varied as any out there. There are touches of blues ("Seeing Other People"), traditional country ("Whiskey Watered Down") and introspective slow songs (album opener, "Trains Cry").

A constant songwriter, Spence penned over 30 tracks ahead of her debut album, and the trimming down process couldn't be done alone. At the end of the day, Somehow has 13 finely crafted and tuned tracks, both from her vault and freshly written.

"My producer, Michael Rinne, really helped with [the tracklisting] process. I had a handful of songs that I absolutely wanted on the record and then felt stumped about the rest. I just felt too close to them all and couldn't see their strength and weakness any more. I needed a set of fresh ears," Spence said. "Some of the songs were brand new and I didn't know their role fully and some were older and I'd nearly forgotten about them. Since they were all new to Mike, that fresh set of objective ears really helped me see these songs in a different way and how they worked with each other. "

Ahead of the release of Somehow on March 3, Music Times is premiering the new track "Don't Call." As one of the loudest and boldest songs on Somehow, "Don't Call" brings in the traditional Americana rock roots with ripping guitars. Spence's soft and sweet voice adds balance to the track, as she sings about letting someone loose who deserves to go.

"'Don't Call' is about deciding to cut ties with someone that just isn't giving you what you need," she told us. "You can hear that decision making process in the lyrics of the verses and then the chorus is the direct message to that person. Sure, it was inspired by real life; no one wants to be in that kind of relationship."

You can pre-order a copy of Somehow now on iTunes. For more information on Caroline Spence, head over to her official website and follow her on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
