"His contribution is a bit more than scoring goals," Martinez told the media this week. "If you want my thoughts, I would prefer it if Wayne Rooney doesn't play. From an opposition point of view, I think Manchester United are a better team when Wayne Rooney plays. He brings a lot more to his performance that just hitting the back of the net."

According to an injury report from Van Gaal, Martinez might not get his wish.

"Wayne Rooney, I think he can play and Michael Carrick can play as well," the coach said. "I was very pleased with [Phil] Jones. Yes, of course [he is fit] because he has already played for me two times for 15 or 20 minutes. Then he plays for the England team. When I want to select him I can select him for the line-up."

Bastian Schweinsteiger will sit out this game.
