Junior Boys Announce 'Big Black Coat' Album, Drop Title Track [LISTEN]

Junior Boys, the moniker for the Canadian electronic pop duo consisting of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, have announced the release of their first new album in five years, Big Black Coat. The forthcoming LP is due out Feb. 5 via City Slang. The announcement was accompanied by the album's first single and title track, "Big Black Coat."

Big Black Coat marks the return of Junior Boys since 2011's It's All True. During that time, both Greenspan and Didemus kept busy with solo projects. Greenspan released a few singles with Dan Snaith of Caribou's Jialong label and produced tourmate Jessy Lanza's Pull My Hair Back. Didemus produced solo tracks under the name DIVA and launched his own label, Obsession.

As Greenspan noted in the album's press release, "One of the nice things about doing the solo stuff, and in particular the album with Jessy, because it did so well, was that I could stop thinking about Junior Boys as being the thing I do and start thinking about it as a thing to do."

As Resident Advisor reports, Big Black Coat also features the band's cover of Bobby Caldwell's 1978 track "What You Won't Do For Love," which you can listen to below.

As Tiny Mix Tapes points out, the album's cover art is reminiscent of The Jesus and Mary Chain's second album, 1987's Darklands, on which the band replaced their drummer with a drum machine and got back in touch with their pop foundation--maybe "an indication of [Big Black Coat's] sonic direction, but then again, maybe not."
