Killer Mike has become something of a political force in hip-hop. Although the Atlanta rapper has been on the scene for almost two decades, he ascended to a higher echelon of fame and notability in 2012 with the release of his excellent R.A.P. Music. The album, produced by Run The Jewels partner El-P, reestablished the Southern rapper, until then most famous for his guest spot on Outkast's "The Whole World," as a politically conscious, eclectic artist with more than one trick up his sleeve. The album cut "Reagan" introduced the world to Mike's sociopolitical beliefs and anger. On the album, Mike speaks of police brutality, systematic racism, and the socioeconomic issues facing young impoverished minorities in America. This political fervor inspired Mike to try to run a seat as a representative of the state of Georgia. Although Mike's efforts came too late, he has left the possibility of a 2016 run open. Continuing in his political involvement, Killer Mike introduced Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders at his 2016 presidential campaign rally in Atlanta.

Mike delivered a full-throated endorsement of Senator Sanders' campaign, and spoke of his desire to relive the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mike said, In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that Senator Bernie Sanders is the right man to lead this country", before telling the crowd to "stay confronting bullsh*t wherever you turn."

Wearing a Run The Jewels T-shirt, the Atlanta rapper told the audience, "I'm not here to talk about our benevolent politicians who are gonna come to save the day for you. I'm not here to talk about a dream that we think is unattainable so we settle for less...I'm talking about a revolutionary. I have no time...to re-live the Reagan years."

"He's trying to talk truth throughout this country and, in fact, throughout the world-trying to bring people together," said Sanders. "Mike, thanks very much for what you're doing."

According to Pitchfork, Killer Mike took Sanders to the Atlanta soul food restaurant Busy Bee.
