Ed Sherean has recently spent some time in New Zealand while wrapping up the closing dates to his extensive world tour. While jumping off of a yacht in Spain earlier in the year, the X singer burst his ear drum while landing in the water, leading him to be scheduled for an operation after the new year.

"I have to have an operation in January on my ear because I stupidly jumped off a yacht really high up and smashed it. I landed wrong and it burst my eardrum so I have to go and get a graft, which means I'm not allowed to fly for a while, so it's kind of good it means I have to stay at home," Sheeran explained to Australian radio station Nova.

The "Thinking Out Loud" singer noted that he didn't initially realize the severity of the situation. "I didn't realise what happened until I went in water again and it's the most painful thing having a hole in your ear drum and having water go in," he continued. He further detailed that it was three of his friend's 24th birthdays, which made the decision to go all out and rent a yacht an easy one - until the unfortunate ear drum even, that is.

"Yeah, it was pretty fun but that's when the jumping off incident happened," the "Photograph" singer joked.

Sheeran isn't the only pop star to endure the pain of a popped ear drum. "Sorry" singer Justin Bieber showed up to the MTV EMAs rocking a plug in his ear after it burst in a wakeboarding accident, MTV News notes.

Wednesday night concluded Sheeran's Australian string of dates, which was housed in Sydney's Allianz Stadium. The final gig brought a surprise performance of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" alongside famed singer and pianist Elton John.
