It's been almost a year since Beyhivers first got a taste of Beyoncé's summer single "Standing On The Sun" in an H&M spot. After a series of semi-leaks last year and the track inevitably getting cut from the diva's self-titled album, today (April 30), the song has finally reached the Internet in full.
"Standing On The Sun" recalls Destiny's Child's peppiest song "Happy Face" from Survivor more so than the beat heavy tracks of Beyoncé, which is likely why it got the final cut from the album.
With tribal drums that command their presence from the first few seconds to twinkling tropical instrumentation throughout the mix, "Standing On The Sun" is exactly what the title suggests -- a sunshiney, sexy anthem perfect for those bikini days at the beach (and those bikini commercial endorsement deals, Bey).
The music can get a little repetitive -- was this song written solely for an H&M commercial? That would explain why there's no real mix up, except for the sole rap verse, and the track literally just goes verse-chorus-verse.
It only takes about half a listen of the four-minute long "Standing On The Sun" to get where it's always logically going to go, and the musicianship drags quite a bit. That's another reason for a smart cut.
Despite its shortcomings, "Standing On The Sun" is a logical musical fit for Beyoncé, once again echoing the happiness of married life, and more importantly, married sex. Beyonce and Jay Z are some of the biggest flame carriers for not only each other but also for monogamy. Their lovin' is so hot, it literally feels like they're "standing on the sun." That is scorching.
And, even if the music drags, it's nice to hear her do something a little outside her comfort zone.
