The lead singers of the band who often claim all the fame, however, lead guitarists are musicians who are masters of their craft. These legendary lead guitarists in rock bands that include Jimi Hendrix and Slash are famous in their own right.

It's true that the vocalist may have his lyrics, but, it is the rhythm section behind him, that truly makes the sound.

1. Jimi Hendrix - As the top spot goes to the rock guitarist and singer Hendrix - among the best tracks of Hendrix include: "Purple" "Haze," "Fire" and "The Wind Cries Mary."


2. Kirk Hammett certainly shaped Metallica's sound on wildly popular songs like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets." Before joining the heavy metal band Metallica, Hammett formed and named the band Exodus.


3. Slash - According to The Top Tens, "Slash should be the 2nd greatest guitarist behind Hendrix. Page should be on 3rd only because of 'Stairway to Heaven.' 4. Keith Richards - the English musician, singer, and one of the original members of the rock band The Rolling Stones.

5. Brian May - Best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. Among the tracks that May composed include: "We Will Rock You," "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Who Wants to Live Forever," "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Save Me."
