According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rihanna was chosen to receive the award because of the stunning visual quality of her videos.

Two of the videos behind her nomination include the short film for “B*tch Better Have My Money,” which was crime drama-themed and the cinema photography for her “We Found Love” music video.

She has also been nominated for other VMAs including Best Female Video for “Work” featuring Drake as well as a Best Collaboration award for her work on “This Is What You Came For” with Calvin Harris.

Rihanna will be presented with the Video Vanguard Award on Aug. 28 during the MTV show, which will be held at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
