Born William Martin Joel in the Bronx, New York City, on May 9, 1949, the musician turns 72.
The singer spent most of his childhood in the suburbs of Hicksville on Long Island. Growing up, he was fond of music at a very young age as his father, Howard Joel, was a classical pianist.
Since music runs in his blood, his mother insisted he takes piano lessons at the age of four. One of his mentors was the renowned American pianist Morton Estrin.
Later in life, he stopped music for a while and decided to take up boxing to defend himself. He started a career as an amateur boxer and became successful.
He later abandoned the sport after his 24th match, where his nose broke.
Per his education, he attended Hicksville High School until 1967, but he didn't manage to graduate.
Since his parents were divorced, he played at a piano bar to support his family.
After failing to pursue a degree, he decided to take music seriously.
"To hell with it. If I'm not going to Columbia University, I'm going to Columbia Records, and you don't need a high school diploma over there," he said in a previous interview.

Why Billie Joel Hasn't Released New Music Since the 90s
In an interview with The Day, the reporter asked him why he had never released an album of new music in more than 20 years.
Joel answered, "The main reason that someone should write is because they want to. If you're writing music, and you don't really want to, it's not going to be any good. It's going to be manufactured."
The singer feels like he has already fulfilled his role as a songwriter to the point that he's happy with the things he has produced over the years.
"I became more comfortable with instrumental music rather than songs, so that's what I've continued to write," he added.

Despite not releasing any music, Joel still goes on tours, and it seems like he's doing a great job as most of his scheduled dates are already sold out.
As seen on his website, the singer will be performing in venues like the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Notre Dame Stadium in Indiana, the Comerica Park in Michigan, and many more.
