Over the past years, instruments previously owned by living and deceased musicians made their way into auctions where they're being sold for a hefty price. One of Paul McCartney's prized possession isn't an exception, as it's currently accepting bids.

According to Inside Hook, the former Beatles member had a custom Les Paul guitar made for him before performing at "Les Paul and Friends: A Tribute Concert" in 1988.

Each performer got customized guitars to fit their needs and style when it comes to sound.

However, he had schedule conflicts, so he never made it to the show. Among the evening performers were iconic musicians like Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, B.B. King, and Brian Setzer.

The show also aired on HBO after.

Despite McCartney not making it to the show to perform with his customized guitar, he was able to use it during a pre-recording segment as part of the program.

Per Robb Reports, the instrument is up for bidding at Heritage Auctions with a starting price of $40,000. The auction is set to end on July 17.

The left-handed gloss black instrument has serial number 81898520. It was decorated with gold accents.

In addition to the guitar itself, the item up for auction includes a matching black pickguard with McCartney's name and the date of his supposed performance, "8-18-88."

Paul McCartney's guitar isn't the only instrument that's being sold in an auction this year, as Kurt Cobain's Fender Mustang was sold for a whopping $2 million.

The late Nirvana frontman used the left-handed guitar in the iconic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video.

The auction proceeds went to the "Kicking the Stigma" initiative, a group that raises awareness and spreads information about mental health disorders.

The guitar has a competition lake placid blue finish and was initially priced between $600,000 to $800,000.

In a previous interview, Cobain said it's challenging to find a reasonable-priced, high-quality left-handed guitar in stores; that's why the Fender Mustang was his favorite.

"Out of all the guitars in the whole world, the Fender Mustang is my favorite. I've only owned two of them," he said.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was the one who purchased the guitar, adding it to his extensive collection of memorabilia once owned by iconic musicians.

Some of the items he previously bought from auctions are George Harrison's Gibson, Gilmour's Black Strat, Jerry Garcia's Tiger, and many more.
