Throughout the music industry, forming friendships among artists could be easy but sustaining those is a daunting task.

For John Legend, his friendship with Kanye West suffered a fallout because of the rapper's political convictions.

Kanye has been instrumental in the debut of John Legend in the music scene, as he was a producer on the former's debut album, "Get Lifted."

John Legend, Kanye West's Souring Friendship Explained

Speaking to the Axe Files Podcast, John Legend explained why he is not as close with Kanye West as he does before.

Per the GRAMMY-Winning singer, it is because of Ye's highly-publicized political convictions.

"[Kanye and I] aren't friends as much as we used to be. I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly," Legend told David Axelrod in the recent CNN podcast.

In 2018, Kanye West started backing then-President Donald Trump despite his massive backlash among the music community.

Notoriously, Kanye donned Trump's iconic "Make America Great Again" camp, saying that it made him feel like he's "superman" while wearing it.

Two year's after, the "DONDA" rapper was snapped in a photo at the White House where he is seen hugging Trump. He continued supporting Trump until 2020 when he ran for reelection.

But aside from voicing out support for Trump, John Legend also pointed out that it was also because they did not support Kanye's unsuccessful 2020 presidential bid, against GOP's Trump and Democrats' Biden.

West had a handful of supporters at the time, these included Tesla founder Elon Musk, his then-wife Kim Kardashian, and her clan, DaBaby, Nick Cannon, and even Pamela Anderson.

John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen were nowhere near the campaign as they were busy pledging their support to now-President Joe Biden.

But despite this, Legend says he still has respect for the former collaborator and admired his honesty.

"I think he's been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health. And he's very real, honestly. So I think there's not a lot about him that people don't get... Like he's been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he's dealing with," the "All of Me" singer explained.

Kanye West was one of the producers of John Legend's debut album, "Get Lifted" which he released on his own music label, GOOD Music.
