Missy Elliott is undoubtedly one of the most legendary names in the hip-hop industry as she's been releasing iconic music since the 90s. Recently, her hometown announced that they will be giving her a significant honor as a gift.

According to All Hip Hop, the Portsmouth City Council in Virginia voted to change the name of a part of McLean Street in her honor.

The street will be named "Missy Elliott Boulevard."

Taking to her official Twitter account, the "Get Ur Freak On" rapper reacted to the news, saying she is humbly grateful for the honor.

"[I've] been through many ups & downs & times I wanted to give up but Gods plan was different! & all I can do is say Thank you," she wrote.

The musician also expressed her gratitude to the city council, saying she's grateful for everything.

The vote between council members was unanimous. Councilwoman Lisa Lucas-Burke also suggested that they give the rapper the key to the city.

"Missy Elliott has been a great rapper, actor, artist and she does deserve this recognition," she noted.

Most residents from Portsmouth agreed about the big name change, but there were some who expressed their dismay.

A resident named Steve Carrol noted that the song "Work It" contained sexual innuendoes and references of genitalia.

What Made the Council Members Decide to Honor Missy Elliott?

According to The Virginian Pilot, a resident named Erin Carter filed a request to change the street name, claiming that it would attract interest in the area, which was deemed as the new entertainment district.

In addition, as a longtime fan, she also wanted to honor Elliott for her contribution to their hometown.

"It's time for her hometown to honor her accomplishments as a music icon. It will be a testament [of] our city greatness that Portsmouth was the place that launched her career," she said.

Missy Elliott's Success

Per the outlet, the legendary artist has sealed her name as one of the most notable rappers. She also became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In addition to her massive success like numerous awards, the musician also got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Growing up in Virginia, she studied at Woodrow Wilson Highschool where she donated $25,000 later in her career.
