Robbie Williams and music great Barbra Streisand met by coincidence while on vacation, but neither knew who the other was. It's quite peculiar, given how big both of them in the music industry.

Williams is aware of his own blunder though, and was quite ashamed to tell the story.

During their vacation in Tahiti, common friends acquainted the singers, as reported by Daily Mail UK.

However, neither Robbie, 48, nor Barbra, 80, realized that the other was a celebrity - and that they share an industry.

The "Let Me Entertain You" performer had pegged Streisand as a "nice old lady," whereas the Funny Girl actress believed Robbie to be a footballer.

Nothing wrong with these presumptions, but of course, both of them are bigger that these.

Williams disclosed the embarrassing incident on the final BBC Radio 5 Saturday morning show hosted by Scott Mills and Chris Stark.

The singer told the pair: "And it was like 'Hi, I'm John', and 'Hi, I'm Rob', and 'Hi I'm Steve' - 'Hi Steve', 'Hi, I'm Barbra' - 'Hello Barbra, I'm pleased to meet you'."

After he realized, it became obvious to him that Barbra was still unaware of who he was.

William's participation in the annual charity football game Soccer Aid caused Barbra to believe he was a footballer as the group mixed.

He recounted: "People were talking about Soccer Aid, and she just presumed I played football. 'And then I was like 'Oh, no, no, no, I'm a singer'. 'And she was like, 'That's nice'."

Robbie's inability to recognize Barbra is puzzling given that he is a music legend in his own right.

'"Nice old lady. Then I sat down next to Barbra. And it was Barbra Streisand. And I was like, 'Oh, ahh'," Williams shared on his thought processes in that surreal experience.

There is no doubt that Streisand is a household name. She is a theatrical and cinema star as well as a world-class singer, performing in the 1968 classic musical Funny Girl. She's won five Academy Awards. In her illustrious career, she has won eight Grammys and amassed a fortune of $400 million.

Robbie Williams, who rose to stardom in the nineties as a member of Take That before launching a solo career, is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with hits such as Angels and Let me Entertain You. Robbie is married to Ayda Field, with whom he shares four children: Theodora "Teddy," 9, Charlton "Charlie" (seven), Colette "Coco" (three), and Beau (two).
