To commemorate the 40th anniversary of one of Michael Jackson's most successful albums, "Thriller," the late singer's estate partnered up with Sony Music Entertainment to release an official documentary.

While the documentary is in its early stages, Sony Music Entertainment announced that it will follow the singer as he worked on the album. The documentary will be under the helm of music historian, acclaimed journalist, and filmmaker Nelson George.

"The release of 'Thriller' redefined Michael Jackson, taking him from teen star to adult superstar, who composed memorable songs, sang beautifully, and reached the highest level of on-stage performance," said George, talking about the iconic album.

"The album, and the short films they inspired, created a new template for marrying music and image. It's been a privilege to explore this extraordinary album and revisit its magic."

'Revelatory' Process

While the documentary is currently untitled as of this writing, one thing is for certain. It will include some never-before-seen footage and candid interviews that were all filmed during the album's inception.

"Michael opened and explored emotional depths and pushed the boundaries of sonic innovation on 'Thriller'," said Jackson's estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain.

"In the process, he breached destructive barriers in the music industry and literally united the world through his music: there isn't a place on this planet that hasn't been exhilarated by the music of Michael Jackson."

They explained that the documentary is an exploration of Jackson's process and impact, and described it as "revelatory."

'Thriller 40'

In May, Jackson's estate announced the release of "Thriller 40," a double-CD set repackaged version of the album released in 1982.

They announced that "Thriller 40" will include unreleased tracks in addition to the nine tracks from its initial release.

Set to be released on Nov. 18 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, fans can expect fan favorite songs like "Thriller," "Beat It," "Billie Jean," "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Think)."

"Thriller" is one of the best-selling albums of all time, Billboard reports. It has received 34 platinum certifications from the RIAA, and won eight Grammy Awards.

Jackson recorded the album from April to November 1982 and released it on Nov. 30. It was reported that he wanted to create an album where "every song was a killer."

"The Girl Is Mine" is the first single off the album, and was released in October 1982. It was Jackson's first-ever song that included a featured artist, Paul McCartney.

He was joined by Quincy Jones in producing the album. Jones worked with Jackson on his "Off The Wall" album, released in 1979.
