How much did Jet Black earn before his death?

Queries about Jet Black's net worth skyrocketed after The Stranglers' founding member died. His representative confirmed that the drummer died peacefully on Tuesday after battling against health issues for years.

Before becoming a musician, Black spent his time as a dedicated and successful businessman who managed ice cream vans.

With his success in different industries, how much exactly was Jet Black's net worth at the time of his death?

Jet Black's Net Worth

Several news outlets released their estimates of Jet Black's net worth upon his death, with one website saying it was around $1.5 million while another claimed it to be $10 million.

Black was a businessman until the mid-1970s. Aside from owning ice cream vans, he also owned one of the earliest home brewing equipment companies.

After his time in the business industry, he started his music journey after meeting Jonny Sox's Hugh Cornwell. The two then formed The Stranglers in 1974.

The band already saw people come and go, with its current lineup including Jean-Jacques Burnel, Baz Warne, Jim Macaulay, and Toby Hounsham. For Black's part, he served as the band's drummer and percussionist from 1974 until he retired in 2018.

Among the albums he became part of include, "Rattus Norvegicus," "No More Heroes," "Black and White," "Live (X Cert)," "The Gospel According to the Meninblack," "La Folie," "Feline," "Dreamtime," "All Live and All of the Night," "Stranglers in the Night," "Written in Red," "Coup de Grace," "Norfolk Coast," and "Suite XVI."

Jet Black's Health Issues

Black started suffering in 2007 when the Stranglers' website confirmed that he was refrained from performing due to atrial fibrillation. It happens when an abnormal electrical suddenly fires in the atria, causing a high, irregular pulse rate.

The next year, he missed the band's schedules again due to chest problems.

In 2012, Black was rushed to a hospital before The Stranglers' concert at the O2 Academy Oxford. The band revealed that he was hospitalized after falling ill before their soundcheck. It was later confirmed that he had a severe chest infection that required slow recovery.

In the years after those health issues, Black became on and off the camera as things became physically exhausting for him. It then led him to officially retire in 2018 at the age of 79.

Following his death, the band's surviving members paid tribute to him and honored his legacy.

Burnel said, "The welcoming committee has doubled. After years of ill health, Jet has finally been released. He was a force of nature. An inspiration. The Stranglers would not have been if it wasn't for him. The most erudite of men. A rebel with many causes."

Warne and the band's manager, Sil Willcox, also released separate statements.
