Aaron Carter's twin sister, Angel Carter, opened up about how the singer's death inspired her in some ways.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Month, Angel spoke about her work in ending the stigma regarding addiction and mental health illness. Months after her brother's death, she revealed that the heartbreaking event somewhat inspired her.

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Aaron's twin sister shared her family's painful past and the untimely death of the singer. Before the "I'm All About You" hitmaker passed away, he also dealt with his own addiction and mental health issues.

When she lost Aaron, the 35-year-old started dedicating her time to supporting On Our Sleeves, a children's mental health organization. She previously launched the Songs For Tomorrow Benefit Concert in January and sent its proceeds to On Our Sleeves, calling the organization a group "close" to her heart.

According to Angel, creating a safe space for everyone starts with children. Thus, as early as possible, the organization helps in breaking the stigma to prevent such struggles and issues.

She revealed that a fire inside her ignited after her twin brother died, causing her to get involved with the organization through the January concert.

"They provide parents and caregivers with free expert resources for parents who are struggling or may not know how to address a mental health issue their child is having," she revealed. "We're launching soon our teacher kits, which will provide the monthly lesson for children in the classroom to talk about mental health."

Angel also spoke about the organization's program called Bloom - which assists parents and caregivers to have the means that can help them address mental health even within their homes.

Angel Carter Recalls Not Having Healthy Space

Although she never experienced it firsthand, Angel expressed her desire to become a champion for the mental health of children.

She disclosed that she never had a healthy space to grow up in, noting that their parents came from troubled homes. Unfortunately, it reportedly became a factor in her and her siblings' mental health struggles.

By working with the organization, Angel is making sure to destroy the generational dysfunction issue and end the mental health stigma. But while working on it, she also opened up about the struggles of seeing her family have a hard time, and it led her to have years-long therapy to cure her trauma.
