HBO has finally canceled "The Idol" after much speculation that it would not be renewed for another season due to poor reviews from critics and fans alike.

Earlier this year, the drama surrounding the controversial show emerged, leading people online to trash the show, including its producers Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd).

HBO Cancels 'The Idol'

According to a The Hollywood Report article, "The Idol" was finally axed by HBO after one season.

"The Idol was one of HBO's most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response," a spokesperson said in a statement. "After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We're grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work."

Per the publication, a final decision for the show's future had long been overdue. Although there were no concrete plans for a multi-season story, there were plans and options to extend the rather limited show to more seasons.

Back then, it was supposed to have a longer run but was eventually trimmed down to five episodes.

Notably, the show and production were egged online after a Rolling Stone report exposed the production and the hostile work environment behind it. It also revealed that there had been "last-minute rewrites" that took place that completely shifted the storytelling on Lily Rose-Depp's character Jocelyn and her toxic relationship with Tesfaye's character.

The Weeknd dismissed the said story, saying to Vanity Fair: "Shows get reshot every day ... What are you gonna do? These are the trials and tribulations of it, and that's what the show is about."

Netizens seemed to be celebrating the cancelation of "The Idol."

"OMG WE WON FINALLY THE WORLD IS HEALING," a user said.

"The way Sam Levinson said that the idol was gonna be the show of the summer makes this sm more hilarious," another posted.

"RIP #TheIdol you were a fun mess to hate-watch," someone commented.

"I watched 12 minutes of it and felt this was one of the worst things I've had watched... it lacked and way to follow or care about any character... maybe Max should take the Spiderwick chronical," one shared.
