Jimmy Buffett's exact cause of death has been confirmed days after his passing.

The famed "Margaritaville" singer died at his Sag Harbor, New York, home on Friday at the age of 76. The statements released by his representative said he passed away "peacefully" with his friends and family surrounding him.

His team posted an official obituary on his website confirming what exactly led to Buffett's death.

Jimmy Buffett's Exact Cause of Death Revealed

According to the obituary, Buffett died from Merkel cell skin cancer, a rare, aggressive skin cancer that begins as a red and shiny nodule in one's body part, including hands, face or neck.

The National Cancer Institute explains that the spot usually appears on sun-exposed skin, and both sun exposure and a weak immune system increase the risk of developing the dreaded illness. It can recur even after it has been treated.

Buffett underwent treatments over the past few years since he was diagnosed with it four years ago, but he chose to continuously perform and hold his last shows until his death.

Instead of flowers, his family asked fans to donate to the musician's Foundation Singing for Change, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute or the MD Anderson Cancer Center instead.

"Buffett had little patience with performers who took themselves too seriously," the statement continued. "He liked to say that the job of singing for a living was descended from the profession of court jester."
