Ed Sheeran talked about why he decided to construct a chapel with its own burial crypt on his property and disclosed which of his songs he regrets releasing.

In a recent interview with GQ, the 32-year-old singer talked about how vulnerable he is when creating songs and how he thinks that's the key to his success. "I believe that any song that people connect with has to feel uncomfortable during the writing process," he stated.

He cited his recent emotive single Salt Water from his 2023 album Subtract (-) and his hit 2017 song Perfect, which he penned for his wife Cherry Seaborn two months into their relationship.

Ed said: 'When I was writing 'Perfect' I thought, This is really cheesy; Cherry is gonna think that I'm like the cheesiest f***ing boyfriend.

"And you know, when I was writing 'Salt Water,' which is all about imagining your own suicide, I was like, F**k, I don't want to put this out and have my parents listen to this.'"

However, he acknowledged that The Man, from his 2014 album Multiply (x), is the song he regrets releasing the most because it made him and other people feel "uncomfortable."

After someone shattered his heart, Ed created the song. He has acknowledged that creating it was incredibly therapeutic but also personal and that he wishes he had not shared it.

He clarified, saying, "It felt super uncomfortable at the time, writing it, and everyone I played it to reacted in an uncomfortable way, which I thought was a good thing, and I put it out. The album probably didn't need that song. I probably needed to write it, but I didn't need to release it."

Ed also addressed the speculation that he is developing a new chapel-style hideaway on his £3.7 million Suffolk estate, complete with a burial crypt. To build his country home, known as Sheeranville, he has invested £4 million in the purchase of five houses. An additional £3 million has been used for major renovations, which include the construction of a pub, tree house, subterranean music room, and tunnels.

He said, "I wouldn't say it's a crypt. It's a hole that's dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there."

He added, "People think it's really weird and really morbid, but I've had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do."
