In the past few weeks and months, there had been a noticeable stream of sexual assault lawsuits that had celebrities, singers, musicians, and even the general public surprised.
This is because, in New York City, the Adult Survivors Act is going to expire already, giving sexual assault survivors the chance to sue their perpetrators that would otherwise be too late to file because of the statute of limitations.
What is the Adult Survivors Act?
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Adult Survivors Act last April 2022, which took effect six months later. The Adult Survivors Act provides sexual assault survivors the time to sue their abusers regardless of when the abuse occurred.
"The fight against sexual assault requires us to recognize the impact of trauma within our justice system. I am proud to sign this legislation, which is part of our collective responsibility to protect one another and create an environment that makes survivors feel safe," Hochul said at the time.
According to The Associated Press, there have been more than 2,500 lawsuits that have been filed under the measure. However, not every lawsuit was headline-grabbing as some were really complex and seemed to be rooted in the city's institutions.
For example, New York State Prisons and Local Jails have been a hotbed of some of the accusations, even New York City Mayor Eric Adams wasn't safe from the measure as a woman came forward and accused him of assaulting a woman who was working as a transit police officer in 1993. (via HuffPost)

Singers, Musicians Sued Under Adult Survivors Act
In the past few months, the public saw the accusations that fell into the lap of entertainer Russell Brand, musician Marilyn Manson, and the notorious producer Harvey Weinstein.
E. Jean Carroll was awarded $5 million dollars after using the law to sue Donald Trump.
Very recently, Diddy Combs was hit by his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura with a sexual assault lawsuit. After settling it, Diddy was hit with another one too, claiming she was drugged and raped by the rap mogul.
Bill Cosby was also added to the mix. Jamie Foxx, who recently suffered a long time in hospital care was also slapped with a sexual assault lawsuit. Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose is also blasted with a violent rape suit.
