In a video, he tried to explain his side about the usage of such imagery and portrayal.

"I wanted to not necessarily apologize but I wanted to explain where my head's at and where it's been for the past week," he started his video. "First of all, when I did the artwork I knew there would be some upset people or whatnot, simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn't mean to mock. This wasn't a 'fuck you' to you people, 'fuck you to the Christians.' It was not that. It was literally me saying, 'Oh, I'm back like Jesus,' that was the whole thing."

According to Business Insider, the video contained explicit imagery and scenarios, with some a callback to his "Montero" music video where he slid to Hell from Heaven through a stripper pole.

He also waved hello to Michael Jackson in heaven, played basketball with Satan, posed for photos at the Met Gala, sheared a fluffy sheep, and even got strapped to a cross.

Lil Nas X posted disclaimers on his Twitter account, defending his work yet again.

"the crazy thing is nowhere in the picture is a mockery of jesus," he tweeted. "Jesus's image is used throughout history in people's art all over the world. I'm not making fun of shit. yall just gotta stop trying to gatekeep a religion that was here before any of us were even born. Stfu."

People also noted that Lil Nas X is creating controversy to stir and elicit attention to his music and videos,

"the problem is y'all judge everything at face value," he added. "i've never released a visual without an underlying meaning and y'all know that. but since i'm a troll y'all discount my art as just 'pissing ppl off.'"
