Psychedelic rocker Ty Segall made a stop in Chicago Sept. 23 in support of his most recent album, Manipulator, and paid tribute to one of his favorite artists after the city's mayor proclaimed it "David Bowie Day."
Bowie opened an art exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tuesday, which prompted Mayor Rahm Emanuel to honor the singer.
Segall's set later that night, Pitchfork noted, included a medley of classic Bowie tunes like "Ziggy Stardust," "Queen B*tch" and a revved-up take on "Suffragette City."
After the band finished "Stardust," Segall wished the crowd a "happy David Bowie Day" before digging into "Suffragette City" at Chicago's Thalia Hall. The singer then went on to cover The Doors's "The End" and Wolfmother's "Woman" last night in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Segall's seventh studio LP, Manipulator, hit stores last month, and it has been creating buzz ever since. The album grabbed a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork.
"With its fuzzed-out Kinksian hooks, 'Susie Thumb' is an obvious choice for Manipulator's lead single and, really, they could all be singles here," the website's review reads. "But that's a comment on both Segall's consistent craftsmanship and the songs' very similar sense of scale, the latter of which ultimately prevents Manipulator from becoming the career-crowning milestone its protracted gestation period suggested."
