In a clip from the new Showtime documentary Genesis: Sum of the Parts, vocalist/drummer Phil Collins talks about when the band made a major transition after frontman Peter Gabriel left in 1975.

"I didn't want to not be the drummer," Collins says in the video below, via Radio.com. "This is what I did. 'This is my territory' ... As far as I can remember, we did revisit some of the tapes and thought, 'Is there really nobody that we've heard?' And we decided that there wasn't." After Collins took the stage as full-time frontman, he said there was "nothing but good vibes from the audience."

"They wanted this to work," he continues. "They didn't compare me with Pete — I was one of the guys in the band coming forward, and I'd been there all along."

Gabriel admits that he didn't think his leaving would be a problem for Genesis. "I think I had more confidence in the band being able to be successful than they did initially," he says.

The documentary aired on the BBC under the title Together and Apart earlier this month. Guitarist Steve Hackett took to Facebook shortly thereafter to point out some problems he had with the doc. "It does not deliver the theme of Together and Apart," he wrote. "In interview I spoke at length as much about my solo career as my time in Genesis, but was not given any editorial involvement."

Genesis: Sum of the Parts aired yesterday (October 10), but it will be released to DVD on November 18. Showtime subscribers can view the doc on the network's Showtime Anytime service.
