Katy Perry always seems to be in a great mood. Between her infectious smile, spirited performances and crazy costumes it's hard to imagine her ever really depressed. Perry did a segment on Monday for Australia's The Project and in it she revealed that not only has she been depressed, but at one point she even was battling some suicidal thoughts.

Perry explained that back in 2011, while going through her divorce from Russell Brand, there was a pretty bleak point, and out of it came her song "By the Grace of God," Perry explained in the interview.

"Sometimes you can be blinded by your extreme emotions. I definitely was looking for answers, and during that time I wrote that song. And yeah, I was depressed, and it was sad, and there were thoughts, but there were never actions, thankfully. I wanted to share that side of my story, because I know there are so many other people out there that have gone through things like that, and you always feel like you're the only one going through that. Well, then comes along a song that speaks to you, that makes you feel like, 'Gosh, I can get through this. If she can get through this, I can get through this.'"

Sometimes, as fans watch celebs, they seem to glide effortlessly through all of life's rough patches. It's almost a comfort when someone like Perry decides to get real and share that they've been just as low as a lot of other people. Fame and fortune can't protect anyone from the pain of heartbreak. Are you surprised that Perry has decided to open up about how depressed she actually was, or does it make sense to you that she's someone that would step up and use it as a way to connect with her fans?
