Sam Smith was named the breakout of the year by Out magazine. He spoke about his experience coming out and the reasons behind why he made his sexuality public. "My aim is to tell people how good it's been for me so that, hopefully, gay men or parents with gay children can look at my story and think, 'Wow, that's how it should be. That's what we can work towards.' That's been my whole motive — to not make it a talking point," Smith told them. "My music should be a talking point. My voice should be a talking point."

Smith has explained before that he was never in the closet but rather never felt he had to explain himself. However, he made his sexuality public in an interview with The Fader earlier this year, when he explained that his album was written about a man who broke his heart.

"In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back," he told them.

During Pride Week in New York this past summer, Smith spoke with Fresh 102.7 and gave advice to those debating coming out.

"I would say, 'just be yourself,'" he told the Jim & Kim Morning Show. "Just be yourself. Don't make it an issue...Let's make it a normality. To make it equal, we need to act equal. Everyone just needs to focus on themselves as individuals and do what makes them happy — and be brave."

Smith told Fresh 102.7 that when he came out, he didn't view it as a big deal. "It's actually tough for me sometimes to put myself in that mindset," he said. "Because it has just been such a normality for me."
