The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, and there seems to be one name surprisingly missing from the list: Angelina Jolie. Earlier this year, the actress was praised for her work in Maleficent and many insiders believed it would easily fetch her a nod or two at awards time. Then Unbroken came out, and Jolie's directorial skills were praised. In spite of both efforts, Jolie's name is absent from the list of Golden Globe nominations.

Adding more than a little bit of sting to Jolie's being slighted is the fact that Jennifer Aniston has not only secured a leading actress nomination today but also grabbed a SAG nod yesterday morning, Dec. 10, as well. Aniston's work as a chronic pain sufferer in Cake has been praised since it was first previewed in September. We heard early on that her performance was generating Oscar buzz, but it was not until she actually started turning up on the list of nominees for other awards did anyone really take that too seriously.

As for Jolie, her work on Unbroken has been praised, especially by the cast that she was directing. They have said that it felt like they were learning with her rather than being bossed around by her. Could that have actually worked against Jolie in the grand scheme of things?

Her name has also surfaced in the Sony hacking scandal, with certain Hollywood players likening her to a minimally talented, spoiled brat. Perhaps behind the scenes that really is the feeling about Jolie. Sure she has tons of fans, but that does not mean she has the respect of her peers, right?

Are you surprised Aniston made the cut and Jolie did not? Are these nominations for Aniston making you want to check out Cake a little more? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
